Ranking software for sports associations

Rankings in seconds, not hours.

Seedwell reads your ranking scheme, learns your rules, and applies them to whatever tournament results you upload. Less admin for your association. Less weight on the volunteers who keep your rankings running.

For any sport that ranks players on points, from national senior lists to masters series.

The problem

Rankings run on goodwill and spreadsheets.

In most associations, rankings are kept by one or two volunteers. After every event they sit down with the results and a copy of the scheme and work it all out by hand. It takes hours per list, it's easy to get wrong, and when that person steps back, the knowledge often goes with them.

  • Copy finishing positions out of results sheets that every organiser lays out differently
  • Look up points for each position, tier and event type
  • Work out each player's age band from their year of birth
  • Apply "best N results count" rules that change as the season goes on
  • Re-sort the list, check for ties and publish it. Then do it all again after the next event
How the ranking calculator works

Teach it once. Upload results. Done.

Seedwell doesn't guess. When your scheme or your results leave something open to interpretation, it asks, and it remembers the answer.

1

Upload your ranking scheme

Give Seedwell the document you already use, whether that's Word, PDF or something else. It reads the points tables, tiers and counting rules and builds a calculation engine to match.

It might ask"If a player reaches the consolation event, do they keep their main-event points as well?"

2

Upload tournament results

Spreadsheets, CSV exports or PDFs, in whatever layout the organiser sent. Seedwell finds the players, events and finishing positions and matches them to your existing list.

It might ask"Is 'J. Smith (Lisburn)' the same player as 'James Smith' on your current list?"

3

Publish your rankings

Points are applied, best-of rules counted and the list re-sorted in seconds. Review it, see exactly why every player is where they are, then export or publish.

ThenSnapshot the list for the season, so you can always show how it looked after any event.

Why it matters

Two jobs Seedwell takes off your plate.

Cut out the unnecessary admin

Copying, looking up, adding up and sorting are the repetitive parts of rankings, and exactly the parts a computer should do.

  • No retyping results from one spreadsheet into another
  • The same rules applied the same way, every time
  • Lists updated the day of the event, not weeks later

Lighten the load on volunteers

Your rankings volunteer keeps the judgement calls. Seedwell takes the hours of arithmetic.

  • Hours back for the people who give their time
  • The scheme is captured in the system, not in one person's head
  • Easier to hand over when someone steps back
Worked example

A real scheme, worked out for you.

Masters schemes often reward consolation events as well as the main draw, and carry part of last season into this one. Here's a scheme like that, worked through two events.

The scheme, as written

Points for where you finish in the main event or the consolation event, plus 10% of last season's total carried forward. Seedwell turns that into rules it applies to every player:

  • Main event: winner / runner-up100 / 90
  • Main event: semi / quarter-final80 / 70
  • Consolation: winner / runner-up50 / 40
  • Consolation: semi / quarter-final30 / 20
  • Carried from last season10% of total
Masters 60+ after event 2 10% carried forward
PlayerCarriedEvent 1Event 2Total
Player A4290 main R/U80 main SF212
Player B61100 main W50 cons. W211
Player C–70 main QF100 main W170
Player D3040 cons. R/U90 main R/U160
Player B carried more from last season, but Player A's two deep main-event runs edge it by a single point. Illustrative figures. Every total in Seedwell can be traced back to the event and rule that produced it.

Questions, not guesses

Where your scheme is ambiguous, Seedwell asks. Your answers become part of the rules, so it only asks once.

Your scheme, your rules

Seedwell follows the scheme your association has agreed. Change the scheme and the engine changes with it.

Questions

Common questions

Does this replace our rankings volunteer?

No. It replaces the arithmetic. Your volunteer still owns the list, answers Seedwell's questions and decides when it's published. They just don't have to spend hours working it out.

Our scheme is complicated. Will it cope?

That's what it's for. Tiered events, points carried between lists, age bands, best-of rules that change through the season. Where the scheme doesn't spell something out, Seedwell asks rather than assuming.

What results formats can it read?

Spreadsheets and CSV files in whatever layout the organiser used, plus PDFs. You don't need to reformat anything before uploading.

Can we check the results before they go public?

Yes. Nothing is published until you say so, and you can see how every player's total was reached.

What does it cost?

Seedwell is in its pilot phase. Talk to us. We're keen to work with a small number of associations to get it right first.

Help shape Seedwell this season.

We're looking for a small number of associations to pilot Seedwell with real schemes and real results. Send us your scheme and a recent results file, and we'll show you your own list, calculated.
